After Carl Shutt had given Leeds a seventh minute lead, Chris Malkin equalized in the sixty-third minute from the penalty spot. Two minutes later Mark McCarrick put Tranmere 2-1 up only for John Pearson to bring the two sides level once more in the seventy-fourth minute. Chris Malkin got his second in the eighty-third minute to put the home team in front and Eddie Bishop made the game safe, a minute later. For Leeds John Lukic replaced Mervyn Day in goal, Lee Chapman replaced Carl Shutt at Centre Forward, Chris O'Donnell replaced John McClelland at Inside Left and Simon Grayson replaced Chris Kamara at Outside Left at half time. Len Curtis came on for David Batty at Right Half after eighty-two minutes. The Tranmere substitutes were Chris Malkin, Eddy Bishop, Ged Brannan and Kenny Irons. Referee: R. Nixon (West Kirby)
